Toolbox Talk:

Why High-Visibility Gear Matters on Site

June 25, 2025

High-visibility (hi-vis) apparel isn’t just for show — it’s critical to keeping workers visible and alive, especially around moving equipment and vehicles.

Why It Matters:

Low visibility is one of the leading causes of struck-by incidents. Workers near trucks, forklifts, or equipment can be missed entirely if they’re not wearing proper hi-vis gear. This risk increases dramatically in low-light, night, or high-traffic conditions.

Key Points:

  • OSHA and ANSI require hi-vis apparel for certain work zones, especially near traffic or moving equipment.
  • Class 2 and Class 3 vests are designed for different visibility needs — choose based on the job and environment.
  • Bright colors like neon yellow or orange, combined with retroreflective tape, help ensure workers are seen from all angles.

✅ Hi-vis only works if it’s worn properly and kept clean.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are we wearing the right class of high-visibility apparel today?
  • Is anyone’s vest too dirty or worn to be effective?
