Fire Extinguishers – Types and Use

Toolbox Talk:

When NOT to Use a Fire Extinguisher

June 27, 2025

Sometimes the safest move is to evacuate, not fight the fire.

Knowing when not to engage is just as important as knowing how.

Why It Matters: Using a fire extinguisher when it’s too dangerous can lead to injury or death. Fires grow fast — and some can’t be controlled with a small extinguisher.

Key Points:

  • Evacuate immediately if the fire is spreading rapidly.
  • Don’t use an extinguisher if you don’t know what’s burning.
  • Never fight a fire alone — always notify others first.
  • Don’t attempt if you haven’t been trained or the area is filled with smoke.

✅ Your life is more important than property — walk away if it’s unsafe.

Ask the Crew:

  • Would you know when it’s time to back away instead of fight?
  • What should your first action be when spotting a fire?
