Toolbox Talk:

Watch for Hidden Nails in Reused Lumber

June 27, 2025

Reused or salvaged lumber may contain hidden nails, screws, or staples that can cause injuries or damage equipment.

Why It Matters:

Workers may cut, hammer, or carry reused wood assuming it’s safe — but leftover fasteners can puncture gloves, cause splinters, or kick back during saw use. Even a small unseen nail can become a serious hazard.

Key Points:

  • Always inspect reused or scrap lumber before using it.
  • Remove all visible nails, screws, and staples with proper tools.
  • Wear cut-resistant gloves when handling suspect wood.
  • Never saw into lumber unless it’s been thoroughly checked.
  • Use magnets or detectors when needed to scan for embedded metal.

✅ One hidden nail can ruin a day — or worse, a hand.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do we inspect reused wood for fasteners or hazards?
  • Are we using the right tools to remove old nails and screws?
