Keeping Walkways Clear

Toolbox Talk:

Watch for Hidden Hazards in Walkways

June 27, 2025

Walkways can be dangerous even when they look clear — debris, cords, or uneven surfaces might not stand out until it’s too late.

Why It Matters:

Many jobsite injuries happen during basic movement — walking from one area to another. A small piece of wire, a low-lying pipe, or a loose mat can cause a serious fall. Workers often carry materials or tools, limiting their ability to see or react quickly.

Key Points:

  • Walk the site with a fresh set of eyes each shift — hazards change constantly.
  • Remove scrap pieces of material, tools, or packaging from walkways immediately.
  • Check for uneven walking surfaces, like broken plywood, shifted mats, or gravel buildup.
  • Illuminate all walkways during early morning, late evening, or night shifts.

✅ If you wouldn’t want to trip over it, don’t leave it in the walkway.

Ask the Crew:

  • Have we done a walk-through for trip hazards today?
  • Are all walkways lit and free of debris right now?
