Toolbox Talk:

Ventilation is Not Optional in Confined Spaces

June 26, 2025

Even if the air initially tests safe, ventilation must often continue during the entire job. It helps remove buildup of dangerous gases, supply fresh oxygen, and control temperature.

Why It Matters:

Hazardous gases can accumulate quickly from welding, engine exhaust, or decaying materials inside a confined space. Without ventilation, safe air can become deadly in minutes — especially in tight or poorly sealed spaces.

Key Points:

  • Use mechanical ventilation (blowers or fans) rated for confined spaces.
  • Place exhaust hoses near the bottom to remove heavier gases.
  • Use intake hoses to supply clean, fresh air from outside.
  • Ventilation must run continuously if work creates fumes or heat.
  • Never block vents or kinks in hoses. Keep airflow unrestricted.
  • Always verify airflow direction — pushing bad air out, not circulating it.

✅ Proper ventilation keeps the space safe while you’re inside it.

Ask the Crew:

  • Is our ventilation system working and properly placed?
  • Are we monitoring air quality while the job is in progress?
