Toolbox Talk:

Using a Lockbox System for Group Lockout

June 27, 2025

When multiple workers are servicing the same equipment, a lockbox system ensures everyone’s safety by controlling access through a centralized locking process.

Why It Matters:

In group LOTO situations, individual locks on each energy source can get chaotic and unsafe. A lockbox keeps it simple: each worker locks their personal lock on the box—not the equipment—so no one can remove it without everyone’s consent.

Key Points:

  • The authorized employee applies locks and tags to all energy isolation points.
  • Keys to these locks are placed inside a lockbox, which is then locked by each worker with their personal lock.
  • No one can access the keys until every personal lock is removed.
  • Workers must sign in and sign out of the lockbox log to track participation.
  • A lockbox system streamlines coordination and reduces errors during group lockout situations.

✅ One box. One process. Maximum accountability.

Ask the Crew:

  • Have we used the lockbox system before?
  • Do we understand how to sign in and remove locks safely?
