Toolbox Talk:

Use Lighting to Highlight Hazards and Work Zones

June 27, 2025

Jobsite lighting should do more than just make things visible — it should guide attention to the areas where caution is needed most.

Why It Matters:

Strategic lighting reduces incidents by helping workers recognize hazards, boundaries, and workflow zones, especially in dim or enclosed environments. When lighting is poorly planned, even trained crews can overlook serious risks.

Key Points:

  • Illuminate high-traffic areas, stairs, and material storage locations.
  • Use additional lighting around trenches, open pits, or changes in elevation.
  • Color-coded or directional lights can help define exclusion zones or traffic lanes.
  • Inspect at dusk or pre-dawn to identify where lighting falls short.
  • Reflective tape, cones, and signage can supplement lighting for maximum visibility.

✅ Light where it counts — prevent what you can’t see coming.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do we have enough light in our current work zone?
  • Are we using lighting to highlight hazards and pathways?
  • What areas are still too dim or shadowed?
