Train for Confined Space Rescue – Before It’s Needed

June 26, 2025

You can’t improvise a rescue in a confined space. Lives depend on preparation and practice.

Why It Matters:

A delayed or uncoordinated rescue can turn one victim into several. OSHA requires that rescue services be capable, trained, and available at all times during permit-required confined space work.

Key Points:

  • Designate rescue personnel before any entry begins
  • All rescuers must be trained in:
    • Use of PPE, SCBA, and retrieval systems
    • First aid and CPR
    • The specific hazards of the confined space
  • Conduct mock rescues regularly to ensure readiness
  • If using an outside rescue service, verify their response time and capabilities

✅ Rescue plans must be more than paperwork — they must be practiced and proven.

Ask the Crew:

  • Who is our designated rescue team?
  • When was the last time we practiced a rescue scenario?
