The attendant is the worker stationed just outside the confined space, watching and protecting the entrant. It’s one of the most important safety roles on site.
Why It Matters:
If something goes wrong inside the space, the attendant is the first line of defense. Their job is to stay alert, maintain communication, and initiate emergency procedures — not to go in themselves.
Key Points:
- Attendants must:
- Remain outside the space the entire time entrants are inside
- Monitor the number and identity of entrants
- Keep in constant communication with those inside
- Know the hazards of the space and emergency protocols
- If an emergency occurs:
- The attendant should never enter the space
- Immediately call for rescue and follow the site’s emergency plan
- Attendants must stop the entry if:
- Conditions become unsafe
- They lose communication
- Unauthorized personnel try to enter
✅ A good attendant is the eyes, ears, and lifeline for the person inside. One mistake can cost a life.
Ask the Crew:
- Who is assigned as the attendant today?
- Do you know exactly what to do if something goes wrong?
