Flammable Liquids & Fuel Storage

Toolbox Talk:

Storing Flammable Liquids and Fuels Safely on Site

June 27, 2025

Flammable liquids like gasoline, diesel, solvents, and adhesives are common on construction sites — but without proper storage, they can become a serious fire or explosion hazard.

Why It Matters:

Improper storage of flammable liquids increases the risk of ignition, especially when combined with hot work, electrical sparks, or static discharge. One mishap can lead to injury, major damage, or even fatalities.

Key Points:

  • Use only approved containers — OSHA and NFPA require flammable liquids to be stored in safety cans or certified tanks.
  • Label all containers clearly with the name of the substance and hazard information.
  • Limit quantities stored in work areas. Keep bulk fuel and solvents in designated storage areas away from ignition sources.
  • Store in well-ventilated, shaded areas — avoid direct sunlight or confined spaces that trap vapors.
  • Bond and ground containers during fuel transfers to prevent static sparks.
  • Never mix chemicals or reuse containers for different substances.

✅ Safe storage keeps flammable materials from becoming jobsite disasters.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are all our flammable liquids in approved, labeled containers?
  • Where are we storing fuel today — is it away from heat and ignition sources?
  • Do we have a fire extinguisher nearby in case something goes wrong?
