Toolbox Talk:

Signs and Barriers Are There for a Reason

June 26, 2025

Warning signs and physical barriers around confined spaces are not suggestions — they are critical safety controls.

Why It Matters:

Ignoring posted signs or moving barriers can lead to deadly mistakes. Confined spaces often contain hazards you can’t see or smell, like low oxygen or toxic gases. Bypassing these controls not only endangers you but also undermines the safety plan for the entire crew.

Key Points:

  • Confined spaces must be clearly marked with signage stating “Danger – Permit-Required Confined Space – Do Not Enter”
  • Barricades, tape, or covers must remain in place until the space is reclassified or a proper entry is authorized
  • Never remove or alter these warnings without clearance from a competent person
  • Unauthorized removal may result in disciplinary action or regulatory penalties

✅ Respect the signage — it’s protecting your life.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are our confined space signs visible and legible?
  • Have we had issues with barriers being moved or ignored on this job?
