Toolbox Talk:

Securing Tools and Materials in Windy Rain

June 27, 2025

Rain often brings strong winds, which can turn unsecured tools or materials into flying hazards.

Why It Matters:

Loose objects can blow off scaffolding, rooftops, or equipment platforms — putting everyone on the ground at risk. Wind gusts combined with slick surfaces also increase the chances of workers losing balance while handling materials.

Key Points:

  • Secure all tools and materials when rain or storms are expected.
  • Use lanyards for hand tools when working at height.
  • Stack materials neatly and tie down items that could shift or roll.
  • Stop work and move to shelter if wind speeds exceed safe thresholds for your task.
  • Inspect surrounding areas for potential blow-away risks before storms roll in.

✅ Securing gear prevents injuries — and keeps the site clean after the storm.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are our tools, ladders, and materials secured right now?
  • Do we have wind limits for stopping work?
