Toolbox Talk:

Secure Cords and Hoses in Walk Paths

June 27, 2025

Power cords, air hoses, and welding leads are necessary — but if left loose across walking paths, they become major trip hazards.

Why It Matters:

Workers often move fast and carry materials, making it hard to see or avoid a stray hose. Trips from cords can cause injuries, spilled materials, or even create electrical risks in wet areas. OSHA cites unsecured cords as a common violation.

Key Points:

  • Route cords and hoses away from walkways when possible.
  • Use cord covers, cable ramps, or tape-downs to secure items that must cross paths.
  • Coil up unused lengths to prevent loops or slack.
  • Never leave cords under debris or materials where they can’t be seen.

✅ Tidy cords mean tidy paths — and safer footing.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do we have cords or hoses running through walk areas?
  • Are we using covers or alternate routes where needed?
