Toolbox Talk:

Safe Digging Around Underground Power Lines

June 22, 2025

Before any excavation project begins, it’s essential to treat the underground the same way you would a live power line above you.

Why It Matters

Underground utility strikes don’t just interrupt service—they can lead to explosions, electrocution, and long-term outages. One misplaced shovel or machine can trigger catastrophic consequences. Many utilities aren’t buried deep, and older maps are often unreliable.

Key Points:

  • Always call 811 at least 48 hours in advance to have utilities marked.
  • Respect the tolerance zone (usually 18-24 inches) on both sides of a marked line.
  • Within that zone, use hand tools or vacuum excavation only.
  • Rely on updated markings, not memory or assumptions.
  • Document the verification process and have a standby plan if exposure occurs.

Dig smart. Hand digging saves lives.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are all underground utilities marked and visible?
  • Who is responsible for hand digging and verification?
