Every confined space entry requires a coordinated team effort. Everyone must understand their specific role and perform it with diligence.
Why It Matters:
Confined spaces can become deadly in seconds. When everyone knows their responsibilities — and sticks to them — emergencies can be avoided or handled swiftly. Confusion about roles can lead to miscommunication, delayed rescues, or overlooked hazards.
Key Points:
- Entrant: The person entering the space. Must follow all procedures, wear required PPE, and maintain communication with the attendant.
- Attendant: Stays outside the space. Monitors the entrant, tracks entry times, and initiates emergency response if needed. Never enters the space.
- Entry Supervisor: Authorizes the entry, ensures all precautions are in place, verifies atmospheric testing, and cancels the permit when the work is complete.
- Each role must be filled by a trained and competent person. Substitutions aren’t allowed unless the replacement is equally trained.
- Communication among team members must be clear, constant, and reliable — especially during atmospheric testing or if alarms sound.
✅ A successful entry starts with the right people doing the right tasks.
Ask the Crew:
- Do we all understand our roles in a confined space entry?
- Is everyone trained for their assigned duties?
