Toolbox Talk:

Responding to Tornado Warnings on Site

June 27, 2025

Tornadoes can form quickly. When a warning is issued, every second counts.

Why It Matters:

Construction sites are full of materials and structures that can become deadly projectiles in high winds. Having a response plan and acting fast is critical to survival.

Key Points:

  • A tornado watch means conditions are favorable — stay alert.
  • A tornado warning means one has been spotted — take cover immediately.
  • Designate specific tornado shelters or low-lying protected areas (never trailers or cranes).
  • Stop all work, including lifts, and secure loose materials when a warning is issued.
  • Never try to outrun a tornado in a vehicle or on foot — shelter in place.
  • Stay in shelter until the official all-clear is given.

✅ Tornado warnings demand instant action — don’t wait to move.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do we have designated tornado shelters on site?
  • Who’s responsible for stopping work and issuing alerts?
