Toolbox Talk:

Responding to Electrical Contact Incidents

June 22, 2025

Despite planning, accidents happen. What matters next is how your crew responds to an electrical contact emergency.

Why It Matters

When power lines are struck or workers receive a shock, panic can make the situation worse. Improper rescue attempts may lead to additional injuries or fatalities.

Key Points:

  • Never touch a person or machine in contact with a live wire.
  • If safe to do so, turn off the power at the source or call the utility provider to shut it down.
  • Instruct others to stay back at least 35 feet from the affected area.
  • Call 911 immediately and provide clear location details.
  • Administer first aid or CPR only when it’s safe to approach.

Safety doesn't stop when the power is live—it begins with your response.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do we know the emergency steps if a line is struck?
  • Who is trained in CPR and electrical incident response?
