Toolbox Talk:

Remove or Bend Over Protruding Nails

June 27, 2025

Nails sticking out of lumber, pallets, or scrap are a common cause of cuts, punctures, and trips. These injuries are preventable with just a few seconds of attention.

Why It Matters:

Protruding nails not only injure hands and feet — they can snag clothing, cause trips, or hide in piles where someone steps or falls on them. A single nail can send someone to the ER with a deep puncture or tetanus risk.

Key Points:

  • Pull nails from boards immediately after removal or demolition.
  • If pulling isn’t possible, bend the nail flat with a hammer.
  • Stack scrap wood with nails facing inward or downward.
  • Don’t walk over scrap piles or lumber with exposed fasteners.
  • Keep a magnet rake or sweep tool nearby to collect scattered nails.

✅ Take out the threat before someone gets hurt.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are we pulling or bending over nails on removed boards?
  • Where are we placing nail-ridden debris during work?
