Toolbox Talk:

Recognizing Symptoms of Overexposure to Noise

June 27, 2025

Long-term noise exposure doesn’t just cause gradual hearing loss—it can also impact concentration, safety awareness, and even mental health. It’s critical to recognize the early warning signs before permanent damage is done.

Why It Matters:

Workers who don’t notice the slow onset of hearing loss may never report it until it’s too late. Spotting symptoms early allows for intervention—before the damage is permanent or affects jobsite performance.

Key Points:

  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus) after a shift is a major warning sign of overexposure.
  • Needing to ask others to repeat themselves more often, especially in background noise, may indicate hearing loss.
  • Increased irritability, fatigue, or headaches can be linked to extended noise exposure.
  • Difficulty hearing alarms, radios, or coworkers could create serious safety risks.
  • Hearing loss often starts in higher frequencies—someone may hear voices but miss consonants or sharp tones.
  • Encourage workers to report symptoms and get tested annually.

✅ Hearing loss is invisible—don’t wait until it’s irreversible.

Ask the Crew:

  • Has anyone experienced ringing in the ears after loud tasks?
  • Do we notice any communication issues during high-noise work?
