Toolbox Talk:

Recognize the Signs of Heat Illness

June 27, 2025

Heat illnesses can sneak up fast — recognizing symptoms early can save a life.

Why It Matters:

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are medical emergencies that can strike quickly, especially on hot and humid days. Workers may ignore early signs until it’s too late. Recognizing and responding fast is critical.

Key Points:

  • Heat Exhaustion symptoms: heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, headache, and clammy skin.
  • Heat Stroke symptoms: hot, dry skin, confusion, rapid pulse, fainting — call 911 immediately.
  • Move affected workers to shade or AC, remove excess clothing, and cool them with water or wet towels.
  • Train everyone to watch for symptoms in themselves and others — don’t wait for someone to collapse.
  • Keep a heat illness response plan on-site and review it regularly.

✅ Know the signs. Act fast. Prevent tragedy.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do we know the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke?
  • Who do we call, and what do we do if someone goes down?
