Toolbox Talk:

Recognize the Early Signs of Hypothermia

June 27, 2025

Cold weather isn’t just uncomfortable — it can be deadly if symptoms are ignored.

Why It Matters:

Hypothermia happens when your body loses heat faster than it can produce it. It doesn’t need to be freezing out — prolonged exposure to cold, wet, or windy conditions can trigger it. Catching early signs protects lives.

Key Points:

  • Early symptoms include shivering, confusion, slurred speech, and clumsiness.
  • As hypothermia progresses, the person may stop shivering — a dangerous sign.
  • Wet clothing or skin increases risk dramatically.
  • Wind chill matters: even mild temperatures can be dangerous with high wind.
  • Always report odd behavior or symptoms in a coworker — they may not recognize it themselves.

✅ The earlier you act, the easier it is to treat.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do you know the signs of hypothermia?
  • What should you do if a coworker is acting confused or stops shivering?
