Toolbox Talk:

Protective Gear for Welding and Cutting

June 27, 2025

Welding and cutting expose workers to intense heat, sparks, radiation, and toxic fumes. Wearing the right personal protective equipment (PPE) is not optional—it’s essential for safety.

Why It Matters:

Arc flash, slag burns, eye damage, and respiratory issues are all preventable injuries when workers are properly protected. One missed piece of PPE can lead to serious or permanent injury.

Key Points:

  • Always wear a welding hood with the correct shade lens for the task. Auto-darkening helmets must be tested before use.
  • Use fire-resistant (FR) clothing—no synthetic fabrics that melt to the skin. Cotton must be treated and rated for hot work.
  • Leather gloves and sleeves protect hands and arms from sparks, UV radiation, and spatter.
  • Safety boots should be steel-toed and high enough to prevent slag from falling into them—avoid tennis shoes or low-cut boots.
  • Respiratory protection may be required for confined spaces or when cutting materials that emit hazardous fumes (e.g., galvanized metal).
  • Hearing protection should be worn when using grinders, air tools, or cutting torches in enclosed or echoing areas.

✅ Your gear is your first line of defense—wear it all, every time.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are we using full PPE for today’s welding or cutting task?
  • Do we have the correct filter lens and FR clothing on hand?
