Toolbox Talk:

Proper Storage of Flammable and Combustible Materials

June 25, 2025

Flammable and combustible materials are common on construction sites. If stored incorrectly, they can quickly turn into dangerous fire hazards.

Why It Matters:

Incorrect storage of flammable liquids and combustible materials greatly increases the risk of fires and explosions. Fires threaten workers’ lives, destroy equipment, and can cause costly delays or shutdowns.

Key Points:

  • Always store flammable liquids in approved containers and fire-rated cabinets.
  • Clearly label all flammable and combustible containers with their contents and hazard warnings.
  • Keep ignition sources such as sparks, open flames, and heat away from stored materials.
  • Regularly inspect storage areas for leaks, spills, or damage.
  • Maintain clear access to fire extinguishers and emergency exits near storage areas.

Proper storage prevents fires before they start.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are our flammable materials stored safely and clearly labeled?
  • Do we know what to do if we find leaking or improperly stored chemicals?
