Waste Disposal and Debris Removal

Toolbox Talk:

Proper Disposal of Sharp Objects and Hazardous Debris

June 27, 2025

Nails, broken glass, wire ends, and other sharp debris pose serious injury risks — especially when they’re buried under other materials or left in walkways.

Why It Matters:

Improper disposal of sharp or hazardous materials can lead to puncture wounds, infections, tire damage, or worse. Workers wearing gloves and boots can still be seriously injured by hidden hazards.

Key Points:

  • Never throw sharp debris into open trash piles or general waste bins.
  • Use designated “sharps” buckets or containers with rigid sides.
  • Bend over or pull nails from wood before disposal.
  • Remove or isolate materials like broken conduit, sheet metal, and shattered glass immediately.
  • Dispose of oily rags, chemical containers, or caulk tubes according to site environmental protocols.

✅ Contain the danger — dispose of it right the first time.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are we separating and disposing of sharp debris safely?
  • Do we have enough containers available near active work zones?
