Toolbox Talk:

Proper Care and Storage of Your Hard Hat

June 25, 2025

A hard hat is durable, but improper care or storage can quickly compromise its integrity and protective abilities.

Why It Matters:

Exposure to heat, sunlight, chemicals, or physical impacts during storage or transportation can weaken your hard hat without obvious signs. Proper care and storage extend the life of your hard hat and ensure it’s ready when you need it most.

Key Points:

  • Store your hard hat out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to avoid material degradation.
  • Keep hard hats away from chemicals, solvents, and other substances that can weaken the plastic.
  • Avoid tossing your hard hat in truck beds or onto the ground, which can cause hidden cracks or damage.
  • Clean your hard hat regularly with mild soap and water, and never use abrasive chemicals.
  • Replace your hard hat every 2–5 years, according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, even if damage isn’t visible.

Take care of your hard hat today, and it’ll take care of you tomorrow.

Ask the Crew:

  • Where are we storing our hard hats when they’re not in use?
  • Is it time for anyone here to get their hard hat replaced?
