Toolbox Talk:

Preventing Trips and Falls Through Effective Housekeeping

June 25, 2025

Trips and falls on cluttered or disorganized jobsites are among the most common injuries in construction, but they’re easily preventable through consistent housekeeping practices.

Why It Matters:

Cluttered workspaces don’t just slow you down—they can cause serious injuries. Trips, falls, twisted ankles, or worse injuries often result when workers navigate around materials, tools, or debris that haven’t been properly stored or removed.

Key Points:

  • Keep tools, materials, and cords out of walkways. Use hooks, shelves, or designated storage areas.
  • Regularly clear debris, waste, and excess materials from work areas—especially in busy traffic zones.
  • Store materials neatly and securely, ensuring they don’t protrude into walkways.
  • Repair uneven walking surfaces immediately, and clearly mark any hazards until they’re fixed.
  • Use clear, bright markings and lighting in all working and storage areas to improve visibility.

A clean, organized jobsite reduces trips and falls, keeping everyone working safely.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are all walking areas clear and safe right now?
  • How can we improve our daily housekeeping habits to prevent accidents?
