Toolbox Talk:

Preventing Eye Injuries from Flying Debris

June 25, 2025

One of the most common eye hazards on a construction site is flying debris. Even small particles can cause severe and permanent damage.

Why It Matters:

Construction tasks like grinding, cutting, drilling, or hammering frequently create airborne debris. Without proper eye protection, even a tiny fragment can lead to significant injuries, including corneal scratches, punctures, or even permanent blindness.

Key Points:

  • Always wear impact-resistant safety glasses or goggles labeled ANSI Z87.1 when performing tasks generating flying debris.
  • When using power tools or equipment that create high-velocity debris, add a face shield for extra protection.
  • Position your body and head away from direct exposure to flying particles whenever possible.
  • Check surrounding workers to ensure they also have proper eye protection.
  • Use barriers, screens, or dust shields when possible to minimize airborne debris.

Protecting your eyes today prevents lifelong consequences tomorrow.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are we consistently using eye protection during tasks that generate debris?
  • Have we identified tasks where face shields or additional protection should be mandatory?
