Toolbox Talk:

Power Line Awareness for Equipment Operators

June 22, 2025

Operators of backhoes, excavators, boom lifts, dump trucks, and cranes need a heightened awareness of their proximity to overhead and underground utilities.

Why It Matters

Most power line contact incidents involve heavy equipment. A lack of visibility, distraction, or poor site planning can result in an operator unintentionally contacting a live wire or digging into a line.

Key Points:

  • Before operating, conduct a 360-degree walk-around to spot hazards.
  • Know the reach, swing, and tilt limits of your equipment.
  • Assign a trained spotter or signaler with a clear line of sight.
  • Use GPS and jobsite plans to confirm line locations underground.
  • Reassess site conditions throughout the day as work progresses.

An alert operator is the job's first and best defense.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are all operators aware of nearby line locations?
  • Are we using spotters and staying within equipment boundaries?
