Personnel Lifts (Man Baskets)

Toolbox Talk:

Only Use Approved Man Baskets

June 22, 2025

Never use homemade or unapproved baskets for lifting personnel.

Why It Matters:

Improper equipment puts lives at risk. Only baskets specifically designed and certified for personnel should ever be used.

Key Points:

  • Use baskets designed and rated for lifting people.
  • Man baskets must have valid load ratings and inspection tags.
  • Never substitute material platforms or custom rigs for people.
  • Always follow manufacturer instructions and OSHA requirements.

✅ If it’s not approved, don’t use it.

Real-World Example:

A crew was lifting a worker using a makeshift platform attached to a forklift — not an approved man basket. The platform lacked proper guardrails and wasn’t secured to the forks. Midway through the lift, the worker shifted their weight, causing the platform to tilt and slide off. The worker fell 15 feet, resulting in multiple fractures.

What Went Wrong:

  • The platform wasn’t designed for lifting personnel.
  • It wasn’t secured or rated for the task.
  • The worker was not tied off.
  • No pre-use inspection or safety check was done.

Lesson:

Shortcuts and improvisation with man baskets can lead to severe injury or death. If the equipment isn’t approved and rated for personnel — don’t use it.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are our baskets labeled and certified?
  • Have we inspected it today?
