Toolbox Talk:

Non-Entry Rescue Is the Preferred Method

June 26, 2025

The safest rescue is the one that doesn’t require someone else to enter the space.

Why It Matters:

Rescuers entering a hazardous space without proper precautions often become victims themselves. OSHA recommends non-entry rescue whenever feasible to reduce risk to rescuers.

Key Points:

  • Use retrieval systems like winches, tripods, and harnesses for non-entry rescue
  • Ensure retrieval lines are connected to the entrant’s harness at all times
  • Keep access clear and retrieval equipment ready during the entire entry
  • Rescuers should never enter unless:
    • Proper PPE is worn
    • Air is monitored and ventilated
    • A full entry permit and rescue plan are in place
  • Practice using retrieval equipment before entry operations begin

✅ Pulling someone out is safer than going in after them.

Ask the Crew:

  • Is our retrieval system set up and functional?
  • Can everyone explain how to perform a non-entry rescue?
