The safest rescue is the one that doesn’t require someone else to enter the space.
Why It Matters:
Rescuers entering a hazardous space without proper precautions often become victims themselves. OSHA recommends non-entry rescue whenever feasible to reduce risk to rescuers.
Key Points:
- Use retrieval systems like winches, tripods, and harnesses for non-entry rescue
- Ensure retrieval lines are connected to the entrant’s harness at all times
- Keep access clear and retrieval equipment ready during the entire entry
- Rescuers should never enter unless:
- Proper PPE is worn
- Air is monitored and ventilated
- A full entry permit and rescue plan are in place
- Practice using retrieval equipment before entry operations begin
✅ Pulling someone out is safer than going in after them.
Ask the Crew:
- Is our retrieval system set up and functional?
- Can everyone explain how to perform a non-entry rescue?
