Toolbox Talk:

Never Skip the Verification Step in LOTO

June 27, 2025

Verifying that equipment is fully de-energized is one of the most critical — and most overlooked — steps in Lockout/Tagout procedures.

Why It Matters:

Even if you’ve shut off a breaker or closed a valve, stored or residual energy may still exist. Failing to test can lead to electric shock, crushing injuries, or worse. OSHA requires verification before beginning work under 1910.147(d)(6) and 1926.417.

Key Points:

  • Always attempt to start the equipment after applying locks and tags to ensure it won’t power up.
  • Use proper testing devices to check for voltage or pressure — don’t rely on assumption.
  • Bleed or block stored energy from systems (e.g., compressed air, hydraulics, gravity).
  • Re-verify after any change in scope, equipment, or work location.

✅ Locking and tagging are only half the job — verifying makes it complete.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do we have the right tools to test for energy?
  • Has verification ever revealed an unexpected hazard on our site?
