Toolbox Talk:

Monitor the Air Continuously — Not Just Once

June 26, 2025

Air in a confined space can change fast. What was safe five minutes ago might now be toxic or oxygen-deficient.

Why It Matters:

Many confined space fatalities happen after work has already started — not during initial entry. Welding, fuel-powered tools, chemical reactions, or even rust can change air quality rapidly. Continuous monitoring ensures you’re not caught off guard.

Key Points:

  • Use a calibrated, multi-gas meter capable of detecting:
    • Oxygen levels (should be 19.5–23.5%)
    • Flammable gases (below 10% LEL)
    • Toxic gases like CO and H₂S
  • Place sensors at the right height — gases settle differently (e.g., CO rises, H₂S sinks).
  • Assign someone to watch the monitor at all times.
  • Alarms mean exit immediately — never ignore alerts.
  • Monitor during breaks, tool changes, or re-entry.

✅ Continuous air monitoring = real-time safety.

Ask the Crew:

  • Is our monitor on and working?
  • Who’s responsible for watching the readings?
