Three-Point Contact and Climbing

Toolbox Talk:

Maintain Three Points of Contact at All Times

June 25, 2025

Every time you climb or descend a ladder, keep at least three points of contact — two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand.

Why It Matters:

Losing balance is easy when carrying tools or rushing. Three-point contact keeps you secure on the ladder and significantly reduces fall risk.

Key Points:

  • Always face the ladder while climbing.
  • Keep both hands free by using a tool belt or hoist — don’t carry items in your hands.
  • Move slowly and deliberately — no rushing or skipping rungs.
  • Three-point contact is required from bottom to top and back again.

✅ Three points of contact = three times safer.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are we using tool belts instead of carrying tools by hand?
  • Does everyone know the three-point contact rule?
