Toolbox Talk:

Maintain Safe Clearance from Overhead Power Lines

June 22, 2025

One of the most important safety rules when working around cranes, lifts, scaffolding, or tall equipment is to maintain proper distance from overhead power lines. This isn’t just a good practice—it’s an OSHA requirement.

Why It Matters

Contact with overhead electrical lines often leads to severe injury or death. Electricity can arc from a wire to a piece of equipment even without direct contact. Crews that fail to maintain minimum clearance can trigger fatal incidents without ever touching the wire.

Key Points:

  • The minimum clearance for lines up to 50kV is 10 feet. For higher voltage, the required distance increases.
  • Always identify line voltage and post clear warning signs near danger zones.
  • Assign a dedicated spotter for any equipment operating near energized lines.
  • Use non-conductive taglines and insulated boom protection when necessary.
  • Stop work and reassess if wind, visibility, or equipment control becomes a concern.

Keep your distance. Electricity needs no invitation to jump.

Ask the Crew:

  • Have we verified line voltage and set our boundaries?
  • Is everyone aware of the 10-foot rule and when more is needed?
