Keeping Walkways Clear

Toolbox Talk:

Maintain Clear Access to Emergency Exits and Equipment

June 27, 2025

Walkways aren’t just for getting from A to B — they’re also critical in an emergency.

Why It Matters:

Blocked exits or access paths to fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, or first aid kits can delay response in a crisis. In emergency situations, seconds count. Keeping paths clear ensures that workers can escape quickly or reach the tools they need to save a life.

Key Points:

  • Never store materials or tools in front of exit doors, stairways, or emergency equipment.
  • Maintain a minimum of 36 inches clearance in front of all access points.
  • Perform regular walk-throughs to check for obstructions.
  • Mark access zones on the floor with tape or paint when possible.

✅ Clear access isn’t optional — it’s life-saving.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are any of our exits or emergency stations blocked?
  • Do we routinely check and clear these areas during cleanup?
