Toolbox Talk:

Maintain and Store Respirators Correctly

June 25, 2025

Respirators protect your lungs — but only if they’re clean, intact, and stored the right way between uses. A damaged or dirty respirator is a hazard, not a help.

Why It Matters:

Dust, oils, moisture, and UV exposure can degrade your respirator’s components. Filters can become clogged, seals can warp, and contamination can spread if respirators are stored improperly. OSHA requires employers to ensure respirators are maintained in a sanitary and reliable condition (1910.134(h)).

Key Points:

  • Clean reusable respirators after each use with mild soap and warm water — especially if shared.
  • Inspect for damage: cracked seals, brittle parts, damaged valves, or loose straps mean the respirator must be replaced.
  • Store in a sealed container or clean bag in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, dust, and chemicals.
  • Never toss a respirator into a toolbox, open truck bed, or onto a dusty shelf.
  • Label storage containers with the user’s name to avoid cross-contamination.

✅ Take care of your respirator — it’s your last line of defense.

Ask the Crew:

  • Where are we storing respirators after use?
  • Are all reusable respirators being cleaned and inspected properly?
