Toolbox Talk:

Lockout/Tagout Devices and How to Use Them

June 27, 2025

Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) only works if the devices used are correct and properly applied. From padlocks to valve covers, each tool has a specific role in keeping you safe.

Why It Matters:

Using the wrong device — or skipping it altogether — makes your lockout ineffective. OSHA requires that lockout devices be durable, standardized, and able to prevent accidental reactivation. A tag alone is not enough without a physical lockout method where applicable.

Key Points:

  • Locks must be durable, keyed uniquely, and labeled with the worker’s name.
  • Tagout devices must warn against use and include worker identification, but must not replace a lock unless locking is impossible.
  • Use hasps when multiple workers are locking out the same equipment — each person must attach their own lock.
  • Valve covers, circuit breaker lockouts, plug lockouts, and other specialty tools are required to isolate various energy types.
  • Never borrow, duplicate, or remove another worker’s lock.

✅ The right device, correctly used, is what makes lockout real.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are we using the correct device for this type of energy?
  • Is each worker using their own lock and tag?
  • Do we have hasps available for group lockout situations?
