Toolbox Talk:

Lock It Out — Control Access to Confined Spaces

June 26, 2025

Confined spaces must be secured when not in use to prevent unauthorized or accidental entry.

Why It Matters:

A confined space left open and unguarded invites disaster. Workers may enter out of curiosity, to retrieve a tool, or because they don’t realize the hazard. Without proper atmospheric testing, supervision, or rescue readiness, a simple misstep can become fatal.

Key Points:

  • Secure confined space openings with physical barriers, locks, or signage.
  • Use danger tags or “Do Not Enter” warnings on access hatches.
  • Only authorized personnel should be able to unlock or open confined space entry points.
  • Never leave a confined space unattended and accessible — even during short breaks.

✅ A locked hatch is a life saved.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are we physically securing confined spaces when not in use?
  • What methods are we using to prevent accidental entry?
