When thunderstorms roll in, lightning becomes a serious threat — especially on open construction sites with cranes, rebar, scaffolding, and other conductive materials.
Why It Matters:
Lightning strikes kill and injure construction workers every year. Being outdoors with metal tools or equipment significantly increases the risk.
Key Points:
- Stop work immediately when thunder is heard or lightning is seen.
- Seek shelter in a fully enclosed building or metal-topped vehicle — open structures like tents or partially built buildings are not safe.
- Avoid working near tall isolated objects, scaffolds, cranes, and metal materials during storms.
- Stay away from puddles, wet concrete, and water-filled trenches, which can conduct electricity.
- Resume work only 30 minutes after the last thunderclap.
✅ If you can hear thunder, you’re close enough to be struck.
Ask the Crew:
- What’s our plan if lightning is detected during a shift?
- Do we have access to safe shelter within reach of this work area?
