Toolbox Talk:

Lift with Your Legs, Not Your Back

June 22, 2025

Muscle strains, herniated discs, and long-term back pain often come from poor lifting form. One bad lift can sideline you for weeks.

Why It Matters:
Back injuries are one of the most common — and costly — injuries in construction. They often happen during simple tasks like lifting a bucket of tools or moving materials. Using proper technique drastically lowers your risk.

Key Points:

  • Position your feet shoulder-width apart for balance.
  • Bend at your hips and knees, not your waist.
  • Keep the load close to your body and avoid twisting.
  • Lift smoothly using your legs — not your back.
  • If it’s too heavy or awkward, get help or use a mechanical lift.

✅ Strong legs are your best lifting tool — use them.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are we using correct form every time we lift?
  • Do we know when to ask for help instead of pushing through?
