Toolbox Talk:

Labeling and Signage for Flammable Storage Areas

June 27, 2025

Clearly marking storage areas for flammable liquids is more than just a compliance step — it’s a critical safety measure that alerts workers, visitors, and emergency responders to hidden dangers.

Why It Matters:

During an emergency or routine operation, unlabeled flammable storage areas can lead to catastrophic accidents. Proper signage ensures that everyone knows what’s stored and how to handle it.

Key Points:

  • Use signs that state “Flammable – Keep Fire Away” in both English and Spanish where needed.
  • Apply NFPA diamond labels or GHS pictograms on all storage cabinets and containers.
  • Ensure that signage is visible from multiple directions and mounted at eye level.
  • Replace faded or missing labels immediately.
  • Train workers to understand hazard symbols and warning signs.

✅ Clear signage helps prevent dangerous assumptions.

Ask the Crew:

  • Can everyone on site recognize the flammable liquid labels and signage?
  • Do our cabinets and containers have proper warning signs today?
