Identifying Permit-Required Confined Spaces

Toolbox Talk:

Label Confined Spaces Clearly and Consistently

June 26, 2025

Every confined space — especially those requiring a permit — should be marked clearly to alert workers before entry.

Why It Matters:

Unlabeled or poorly marked spaces increase the chances of someone entering without proper protection, training, or authorization. Signage is a critical line of defense to prevent accidental or unauthorized entry.

Key Points:

  • Use bold, weather-resistant signage at all confined space entry points.
  • Labels should clearly indicate:
    • “DANGER – Permit-Required Confined Space – Do Not Enter”
    • Specific hazards (e.g., toxic gases, engulfment)
    • Entry requirements (permit, attendant, air monitoring)
  • Temporary jobsite spaces (e.g., tanks, pits, crawlspaces) must also be labeled during construction.
  • Train all crews to recognize and respect these labels as non-negotiable safety controls.

✅ Clear signage saves lives by stopping entry before a worker steps into danger.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are all confined spaces on our site labeled?
  • Would someone new on the job immediately know not to enter?
