Toolbox Talk:

Know Your Wind Limits Before Starting Work

June 27, 2025

High winds can turn routine tasks into deadly risks — always know your limits before lifting, climbing, or operating equipment.

Why It Matters:

Winds above certain speeds can destabilize cranes, knock workers off ladders, or send unsecured materials flying. Understanding and respecting wind thresholds helps prevent serious incidents.

Key Points:

  • Always check manufacturer wind limits for cranes, lifts, and scaffolding.
  • Monitor wind speeds throughout the day using onsite anemometers or weather apps.
  • Suspend operations if gusts exceed safe thresholds — even brief bursts matter.
  • Tie down or remove loose materials and tools that could become airborne.
  • Communicate wind warnings across the site so all trades are aware.

✅ If the wind is strong enough to move materials, it’s strong enough to move people.

Ask the Crew:

  • What’s the wind forecast today?
  • Do we know the wind limits for the equipment we’re using?
