Different jobs call for different respirators. Using the wrong type can give a false sense of security — and expose you to deadly hazards.
Why It Matters:
Not all respirators protect against all hazards. A dust mask won’t stop chemical vapors. A full-face respirator won’t work without the right filters. Matching the protection to the hazard is critical for staying safe.
Key Points:
- N95 or filtering facepieces are good for dust, but not gases or fumes.
- Half-face or full-face respirators with cartridges are needed for chemical exposure.
- Powered Air-Purifying Respirators (PAPRs) offer higher protection and comfort for extended use.
- Use the correct filter or cartridge — each is designed for specific hazards (dust, organic vapor, acid gas, etc.).
- Always check the label or SDS (Safety Data Sheet) to determine what type of respirator is required.
✅ Right mask. Right filter. Right protection.
Ask the Crew:
- What kind of respirator are we using today — and is it right for the hazard?
- Do we know what the filters or cartridges are rated for?
