Toolbox Talk:

Keeping Your Hard Hat Clear of Modifications

June 25, 2025

Hard hats are carefully engineered safety devices—any modification can drastically reduce their ability to protect you.

Why It Matters:

Drilling holes, attaching accessories improperly, or modifying your hard hat in any way compromises its structural integrity. Even minor changes can prevent your hard hat from absorbing impacts effectively, putting you at risk of serious head injuries.

Key Points:

  • Never drill holes or make alterations to your hard hat—this weakens the protective shell.
  • Only use accessories and attachments approved by the hard hat manufacturer.
  • Avoid using adhesives, stickers, or paints unless approved—they may hide damage or degrade the plastic.
  • Regularly inspect your hard hat for unauthorized modifications or damage from improper attachments.
  • If you need special accessories (like headlamps), use equipment specifically designed for your hard hat.

Your hard hat works best exactly as intended—leave modifications out.

Ask the Crew:

  • Have any modifications been made to your hard hats?
  • Do we have approved accessories for special job requirements?
