Toolbox Talk:

Inspect and Maintain Hearing Protection

June 25, 2025

Hearing protection only works if it’s in good condition and worn correctly — don’t treat it like disposable gear unless it is.

Why It Matters:

Worn-out earplugs or damaged earmuffs can fail to block dangerous noise, leaving you exposed without even realizing it. Keeping your hearing protection clean and functional ensures it does its job every time.

Key Points:

  • Inspect earplugs for cracks, dirt, or deformation. Replace disposable ones after each use.
  • Check earmuffs for worn cushions, loose bands, or cracked shells.
  • Clean reusable plugs and muffs regularly with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh chemicals.
  • Store hearing protection in a dry, clean location — not tossed in toolboxes or pockets.
  • Replace hearing protection as recommended by the manufacturer or if it no longer seals properly.

Damaged protection is no protection at all.

Ask the Crew:

  • Have we checked our hearing protection gear today?
  • Are we storing it the right way when not in use?
