Overhead Power Line Clearance

Toolbox Talk:

Identify All Overhead Hazards During Planning

June 22, 2025

Before any lifting or equipment setup, all overhead hazards — especially power lines — must be identified and factored into the plan.

Why It Matters:

Crane strikes and electrocutions often happen because hazards weren’t spotted early. Pre-planning gives everyone time to adjust and stay safe.

Key Points:

  • Walk the site during pre-lift planning to spot all overhead lines and obstructions.
  • Document power line locations and voltage levels if known.
  • Mark hazard zones clearly on the lift plan and communicate with the full crew.
  • Consider using barriers or spotters if working near energized lines.

✅ Plan the lift. Protect the team.

Ask the Crew:

  • Have we walked the jobsite today?
  • Are overhead lines marked on our plan?
