Wearing high-visibility gear is only part of staying safe — proper lighting ensures that gear does its job.
Why It Matters:
Even the best hi-vis vests or stripes are ineffective if the lighting is poor. Workers in low-light or backlit conditions are still at risk of being struck by vehicles or equipment operators who can’t see them clearly.
Key Points:
- Hi-vis clothing needs light to reflect or stand out: Without light, retroreflective material loses effectiveness.
- Supplement with LED lights or lighted PPE: Flashing beacons or lighted vests improve visibility in dark zones.
- Check lighting angles at night or early morning: Glare from headlights or shadows from equipment can hide workers.
- Use light towers and directional lighting in traffic or equipment zones: These prevent workers from being “lost in the dark.”
✅ Bright gear and bright lights keep everyone in sight.
Ask the Crew:
- Are we relying on hi-vis alone in dark conditions?
- Do our work areas have enough lighting to highlight workers?
- Should we reposition lighting to better cover blind spots or walk paths?
