Toolbox Talk:

Hearing Loss Is Permanent — Protect It or Lose It

June 25, 2025

Noise on the job doesn’t just cause temporary discomfort — it can lead to irreversible hearing damage over time, even if it doesn’t seem “too loud” in the moment.

Why It Matters:

Hearing loss often creeps in slowly. You won’t feel it happening, but once it does, there’s no going back. Construction sites regularly expose workers to sound levels over 85 decibels — the OSHA limit for an 8-hour shift. Beyond that, you need hearing protection.

Key Points:

  • Use earplugs or earmuffs in high-noise areas (grinding, cutting, jackhammering, etc.).
  • Sounds over 85 dB require protection; 100 dB can damage hearing in under 15 minutes.
  • If you need to shout to be heard at arm’s length, the noise level is likely too high.
  • Combine earmuffs and plugs for maximum protection in very loud zones.
  • Store hearing protection clean and dry — don’t reuse disposable plugs too many times.

You can’t fix hearing loss — but you can prevent it.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do we know which areas on site require hearing protection?
  • Are we using the right protection for today’s work?
