Toolbox Talk:

Hazards of Welding and Cutting Operations

June 27, 2025

Welding and cutting work may seem routine, but these tasks expose workers to fire, electric shock, toxic fumes, and serious burns. It’s critical to take precautions every time.

Why It Matters:

Many jobsite fires and injuries stem from improper welding practices or failure to manage surrounding hazards. A moment of inattention can lead to long-term injury or major damage.

Key Points:

  • Hot sparks can ignite flammable materials dozens of feet away.
  • Electric shock is a serious risk—inspect welding leads and ensure proper grounding.
  • Toxic fumes and gases are produced from metals, coatings, and cleaning chemicals—ventilation or respirators may be required.
  • Eye protection must be rated for the type of welding; improper lenses can lead to flash burns.
  • Always inspect surroundings for flammables, including overhead and underneath the work area.

✅ Plan the area, protect the body, and manage every hazard.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are we welding or cutting near any combustible materials?
  • Do we have fire blankets or shields in place to contain sparks?
